Upset of the year candidate: Singapore Airlines dethrones the middle east airlines. Wins best airlines.

The Middle East is the SEC of airline travel. No ifs, ands or buts. Championship after championship. They've been chanting "mi-ddle-east" at every airline event since 2011. The last 6 of 7 Best Airline of The Year winners have been awarded to a Middle East company.

2017 - Qatar Airlines
2016 - Emirates Airlines
2015 - Qatar Airlines
2014 - Cathay Pacific Airlines
2013 - Emirates Airlines
2012 - Qatar Airlines
2011 - Qatar Airlines

Nobody does it like The Middle East. They are well-oiled machine funded by welled oil machines. A dynasty.

"Air Canada won best airline in North America"
"Yeah they wouldn't win shit if they flew in the Middle East"

Real airlines fly in the Middle East. They constantly land the best talent in the area to go along with the unmatched state-of-the-art facilities. Grit, intangibles, fundamentals are the name of the game. Led by a solid ground game but also reliable in the air. It may not be the prettiest or most entertaining but they get the job done.

Does the airlines industry have a super conference problem? Does the Middle East have a too easy non-conference schedule? Before these questions could have been debated in a circle for weeks, SkyTrax, as voted by passengers, announced Singapore Airlines the winner for 2018.

(CNN) — After 10 years in the wilderness -- if a premium airline that flies direct to more than 60 destinations can truly experience a wilderness -- Singapore Airlines is back on top.

The Asian carrier was named Airline of the Year at the 2018 Skytrax World Airline awards, an honor it last held in 2008. It beat last year's victor, Qatar Airways, into second place.

"We're very ecstatic," Yeoh Phee Teik, Singapore's senior vice president of customer experience, told CNN, shortly after senior staff and crew took to the stage at a glitzy ceremony in London on Tuesday.

Singapore is title town after ten years of rebuilding and shortcomings. I MEAN LOOK AT SINGAPORE AIRLINES GUY. That's the face of a man who's finished in the top 3 every year since 2011 and finally got over the hump. A make or break year for this guy.

Many were demanding changes at the top, to bring in a new system, anything new to get over heartbreak after heartbreak. Regional champions almost a guarantee every year but failing on the international stage. But Singapore Airlines trusted the process and here they are popping champagne bottles preparing for a victory parade. Congrats, Singapore's year. Thank god we don't have to hear "Mi-ddle-East" chants until about this time next year.

Also, I'm not sure what "after ten years in the wilderness" means but I picture it like the tiny plane they fly with in Jurassic Park III to get to the island that gets destroyed by dinosaurs. So basically ten years ago their planes were getting torn apart by dinosaurs and now they are on top of the world.

I've never flown with Singapore but after doing some academic Google research it looks legit. The ground game is consistent with some of the best lounges you can ever find to relax before or after a flight. They have one of the youngest fleets that have yet to hit they're prime. The first class suite is already one of the best in the game.

So now is it time to ask the question, is the Middle East no longer the best region in the world? Is the Middle East overrated? Does the Middle East need to change the way they operate to a more "modern" uptempo style?

Meanwhile, people are already talking about a possible Singapore Airlines dynasty. Will they repeat? Championship slump? They way to early rankings for 2019 have them at the top and rightly so. A lot of solid talent and management are coming back. I'd lock them in as the favorite again now that they are over the hump, or maybe they'll start breaking hearts again under the bright lights.
